When you search for something on websites like Google, Bing, or Yahoo, you expect to see a list of links to sites that provide you with the information you are looking for. You click on the links near the top of your results and probably ignore the dozens of other links in the search results.
The links at the top are typically the most relevant to what you are searching for. They’re also conveniently placed, so you don’t have to scroll down endlessly and click through to other pages of results. If you don’t find what you are looking for, you refine your search so that the results you get have what you need.
A question you may have thought about but never asked is this: “How does this site determine which links show up near the top of the results?” This is where SEO comes into play.
What Is SEO?
SEO stands for search engine optimization. Search engine optimization refers to the process of increasing a website’s position on the list of links provided when someone searches for a term on a search engine.
Let’s break that down. If a person were to search for “Plastic Surgery Los Angeles,” they would be given a long list of pertinent search results. In order to come up with this list, a large and diverse amount of information is gathered from the content on sites across the internet. The information gathered goes through an algorithm that determines which sites have the most relevant information to your search terms.
The algorithm uses information like the amount of visitors the site receives, the amount of links to the site from other sites, and other more complex information like meta descriptions, domain-level link authority, and page-level keyword quantity.
Through this, it determines where to place a webpage on the list of results provided by the search engine.
How to Use SEO to Your Advantage
When a website is listed higher up in the search results, this can result in an increase the amount of visitors to that site. How can SEO improve your website’s placement in search results (also known as its ranking)?
The key word is “optimization.” The goal of SEO is to make it easier for search engines to recognize and understand the information on your site. If the search engine can easily understand this information, it is more likely to recommend you as a more relevant site.
There are a number of things you can do to a site that will increase its likelihood of being recognized as more relevant.
Some are simpler and others are more complex. Our goal at NKP Medical is to help you gain a thorough understanding of what SEO is, how it works, and how you can use it to increase your online presence, success, and revenue.
