We all want to start off the new year strong and stable, with the long-term goal of maintaining that stability throughout the rest of the year. Unfortunately, factors outside of our control may prevent this.
In the early days of 2019, the SEO community has noted abnormal volatility in the rankings of Google search results. For the most part, fluctuating positions are normal and can even occur several times throughout a single day. The reason these particular fluctuations stand out is because how significant the changes were compared to the average.
What Does This Mean for My Rankings?
When changes like this happen without an obvious cause, it can be a bit worrying. Some people may go into a bit of a panic thinking about a worst-case scenario where there site doesn’t even crack the top 500.
The first thing you should do is relax. We already know that Google is prone to releasing updates and changes to their algorithm without warning. Google also isn’t keen on unveiling specifics on what those algorithm changes are and how they may affect certain sites over others. While there is no confirmation yet that an update has been rolled out, the signs seem to be pointing in that direction.
For the most part, you don’t need to panic over your rankings. There is a good chance that your rankings will see some improvement from these changes or no changes at all. If you do notice a consistent drop in your rankings, that doesn’t mean that things will remain that way. Once patterns are identified, updates can be made to your site to optimize it for the new algorithm changes.
